VERITAS - Dell Enterprise Software 1.0 Configurator
Glossary
NetBackup Architecture - VERITAS NetBackup™ software has a three-component architecture. A typical NetBackup configuration consists of one Master Server, one or more Media/SAN Media Servers, and multiple Clients.
NetBackup Server - Any system that manages tape or disk backup hardware. NetBackup software offers three different servers: Master Server, Media Server, and SAN Media Server.
NetBackup Master Server - The Master Server is the "brains" for all data protection activities, from scheduling and tracking client backups to managing tape media and more.
NetBackup Media Server - Manages backups and restores of Client and the Media Server's local data to direct attached or SAN-attached storage (tape/disk).
NetBackup SAN Media Server - Provides all the functionality of a Media Server without the ability to backup and restore data from remote clients. The SAN Media Server is designed for data-intensive systems that require high performance access to SAN attached backup hardware.
NetBackup Client - Any system that requires protection. A NetBackup Client sends and receives data across the local area network (LAN) to and from a NetBackup Master/Media Server.
Clients are categorized as one of the following:
Storage Terminology
Robotic Controlled - Tape drive that resides in a robotic-controlled library, stacker, or autoloader.
Standalone Tape Drive - Tape drive that requires manual intervention to change tape media, no robotics are involved.
Storage Area Network (SAN) - Dedicated network that provides connectivity between servers and storage resources. Organizations often deploy a SAN to remove the storage traffic off the production network (LAN) and share tape and disk resources between servers.
